Introductory Notes

Dear Readers, hee hee I've always wanted to say that!

I was reading this paper that I submitted for my criminology unit in 2008. I worked my ass off researching this. And for a somewhat convoluted question, with hardly any resources, I did an all right job on it. It was interesting to research especially after my trip to Hakea Prison which I actually did a blog entry for which you can read here: http://thelilbanana.blogspot.com/2008/04/visiting-hakea-prison.html

The formatting is a bit out of whack, all my footnotes are missing which is a pain because they are pretty informative, but all the material which I have referred to are at the end of this entry. I actually miss researching and writing down my conclusions into a nice, tight paper. Maybe if I'm bored I'll try and do some in my spare time. I've done some research on doctor's duties in relation to the emergence of alternative medicine. If I can find time, I may dabble a bit.

But now I'm way off track.

Okies, so if your bored, its an interesting read. Let me know what you think. If your lazy... perhaps move along and read another time, or at least read my hakea prison entry. lol

The importance of understanding criminological theory when responding to crime:

The Criminal Justice System in WA

Anna Sasson

1.0 Introduction

Theory is part of an explanation, which connects a particular trend to the world of information, beliefs and attitudes of a people at a particular time or place. Various criminological theories have emerged as a means to discover the causes of criminal behaviour and to utilise that knowledge to prevent and decrease the rate of crime within society. This ultimately has resulted in some contradicting criminological theories such as the classical and positivist schools of thought. Yet these inconsistencies within the field do not diminish the importance of utilising this body of knowledge that has grown over time when considering the administration of the WA criminal justice system.

In WA, there appears to be a lack active utilisation of criminological theory within its criminal justice system. Nevertheless, in hindsight, one can relate criminological theories to WA’s response to crime through its various situational crime prevention schemes such as the Neighbourhood Watch program and Operation Burglary Countdown. Despite the fact that these initiatives has had some success and is cost efficient, this paper argues that the WA’s criminal justice system should take a more self-conscious, multi-faceted approach when responding to crime by utilising criminological principles such as classicism and positivism as a foundation and guide to implement more schemes with a stronger focus on socio-political issues within the community, such as the WA Alcohol Plan (Alcohol Plan) and Liveable Neighbourhoods Sustainable Cities Initiative (Liveable Neighbourhoods) and to provide a more complex understanding of criminal behaviour within the WA criminal law sentencing process.

2.0 Criminological Theory

2.1 Classical and neo classical criminology

The underlaying concept of the classical school of criminological theory is that humans are capable of understanding themselves and as a consequence act in such a way to promote their own best interests. Crime is therefore perceived as a result of the free choice of the offender who rationalises his or her criminal behaviour by assessing the potential benefits against the potential costs. Neo classical criminologists built upon this foundation and updated the concept with the notion of “rational choice theory,” taking into consideration other disciplines such as economics, economics psychology and sociology.

Classical and neo classical criminology has led to the concept of deterrence. Deterrence refers to increasing the costs and decreasing the benefits of crime so that individuals will rationally choose not to commit the crime. In light of this, criminologists have attempted to formulate methods of punishment and various situational crime preventative schemes to decrease the rates of criminal offences. This approach has been prevalent in the WA criminal justice system’s response to crime and could be used more so within the criminal sentencing principles.

2.2 Positivism – The psychological and sociological factors

In contrast to the classical schools of criminology, positivist theorists rest their ideas on the concept that criminal behaviour is caused by factors that go beyond the offender’s control. Instead of balancing on the costs and benefits, thinking and reasoning are merely a process of rationalisation which individuals justify their predetermined courses of action. Originally positivism was focused was on biological factors, but more recently the emphasis has been shifted to the psychological and the social factors that contribute to causes of criminal behaviour. Some of the social factors include economic depravation and lack of education, where an individual as been cultured within an area that has been ‘fertile grounds’ for the evolution of delinquent behaviours and values over generations, therefore not knowing any better than to act in antisocial manner. This principle would be better utilised as an aspect to consider in developing crime preventative schemes, but may be problematic if used within the criminal sentencing process.

3.0 Criminological Theory and Preventing Crime in Western Australia

3.1 Criminology in community based situational crime prevention

Situational crime prevention initiatives can be said to stem from neo classicism and the rational choice theory. They emphasise micro-preventative crime strategies utilising local authorities, business and the public to use practical deterrents. Promoting a crime-specific approach, deterrents are focused on changing the environment or situational factors around an individual so that the costs to perpetrate the crime outweigh any possible benefits. In WA such measures can be exemplified by Neighbourhood Watch and Operation Burglary Countdown programs which target blue collared crimes.

Neighbourhood Watch

Neighbourhood Watch was initiated by the WA government in the 1980s in a response to the high rates of burglaries within the residential areas. It is a system of a positive communication and active citizenship between the community and the WA police, as it is the residents who have the special knowledge of what is usual social activity and what is unusual social activity within their neighbourhood. In hindsight, it can be read to be a situational crime preventative initiative as the aim is to change the residential environment to a place where individuals were to be deterred from making their rational choice to commit an offence in areas where the Neighbourhood watch is active. Despite the increased awareness and knowledge of citizens within a Neighbourhood watch area, the success of this initiative relies on the extent of the involvement and maintenance of interest of both the police and residents in the program, and the issue of displacement, where crimes would transfer to other neighbourhoods arises. Therefore there is uncertainty as to whether this program would have any long term effects on crime rates.

Operation Burglary Countdown

Operation Burglary Countdown specifically refers to utilising the rationale choice theory by introducing various schemes aimed to reduce the offender’s confidence and the appeal in conducting a successful burglary by making the crime more difficult to commit and making apprehension and conviction more likely. Some of the series of community based initiatives of Operation Burglary Countdown include ‘providing information and increasing awareness for householders, free home security audits for victims of burglary, support and advice for victims, development of divisionary recreational programs for youths at risk,’ local community development, an interactive email system that alerts residents of local crime in real time (E-Crime Alert). In comparison to the Neighbourhood watch programs this appears to have more success in that there is a stronger socio-political focus by the involvement within various groups within a community and the police, rather than just relying on the initiative of the residents within an area.

3.2 Criminology in macro level socio-political initiatives

Macro level socio-political initiatives are characterised as complex, costly and does not necessarily provide an immediate affect on crime. Yet despite the “costs” of implementing such schemes, the “benefits” are more long term. This is due to the fact it is a multifaceted approach which targets the environmental, social, economic and the psychological factors of citizens. These initiatives affect the rational choice of an individual, creating an environment which does not support criminal behaviour, it educates and focuses on changing the attitudes of society so that individuals are encouraged to interact positively within the community or face punishment and social disapproval. WA’s Liveable Neighbourhoods and Alcohol plan are examples of macro level preventative schemes.

WA’s Liveable Neighbourhoods

The Liveable Neighbourhoods initiative provides a planning framework of macro crime preventative measures such as community environmental design, movement network, public parkland, activity centres, employment and schools in order to open up and make neighbourhoods more accessible in order to ‘design’ out crime from communities. This retrospectively can be interpreted to focus on those environmental issues raised in positivism, that contribute to the development of an individual’s upbringing and the replacement of a social stigma and attitude away from a delinquent culture to a more positive and social way of life. The City of Gosnells utilised the recommendations from the Liveable Neighbourhoods and implemented a Safecity Urban Design Strategy which aimed to develop building designs and urban structure which would reduce the opportunities for crime to occur and promote an environment where the community would have more interaction, and passive surveillance. The success of this scheme has included the reduction of burglaries, theft and car crime within the whole City. Other programs such as the New Living projects under the Ministry of Housing attempt to revitalise urban areas such as Bunbury, and Armadale/Kelmscott attempt to achieve similar results.

WA’s Alcohol Plan

There is a strong correlation between alcohol abuse and crime. Therefore controlling and decreasing alcohol abuse provides multiple benefits to the community and to individuals. The WA Alcohol Plan (Alcohol Plan) is an initiative of the WA’s Drug and Alcohol Strategy implemented by the State Government to change the attitudes of the society to a culture of responsible alcohol use in order to promote healthier and safer community.

The Alcohol Plan targets three key aspects within the community in order to implement a multifaceted socio-political change in the attitudes towards alcohol, The first key area is the assistance to young people to avoid high risk alcohol consumption. This utilises the school system to instil a continuous drug and alcohol education to students that aims at developing a safe and positive attitude towards the use of drugs and alcohol. Educational programs include theory, reflective practice, evaluation and an increased parent and community involvement for an all-round approach that promotes non-contradictory messages. An emphasis is also placed on effective school organisation and behaviour management to encourage the development of positive social relationships within schools in order to prevent antisocial behaviour that leads to a greater risk in youth alcohol use.

The second area focuses increasing the ‘capacity and commitment of communities to take ownership and control of factors within their local environment that impact on alcohol related problems.’ This includes changing the attitudes within the community by the building awareness as to the possible health and social harms of alcohol abuse such as underage drinking, drink driving, and family and domestic violence through the use of the media. The last key area is the enforcement of responsible supply and service of alcohol. This includes enforcing laws that prohibit under age drinking, the requirement for persons serving alcohol to have taken a Responsible Service of Alcohol course, the review of the locality and trading hours of liquor outlets, and the consideration of the imposition of tax.

4.0 Criminology in criminal sentencing

Another area where criminology should have a stronger influence is WA’s criminal sentencing process. The inclusion of criminological theory into the decision making process for the judiciary allows judges to impose the most appropriate sentencing by taking into consideration all the circumstances of the offence and the offender. Criminological theories would shed light as to the motivation and the reason for the criminal offence. Yet, so far with respect to judicial decision making in criminal matters, criminology is not actively utilised. Instead it appears that criminology merely runs parallel with the ideological administration of criminal justice as commentary rather than actual implementation or influence in the development of criminal sentencing.

Criminology not being utilised in the decision making process for criminal sentencing and for the developmental stages of government schemes to prevent crime, could be attributed to the fact that the theories tend to pose a lot more contradictions than providing a concrete explanation of crime. Contradictions such as those found in positivism referring to the rates of crime relative to the rates of unemployment, poverty and lack of education. The issue is the inability of criminological theory to establish the cause of crimes to the appropriate standard of proof. There are too many inconsistencies in the theories behind why some people would commit a crime, and while others do not.

5.0 Conclusion

In comparison to the Neighbourhood Watch and Operation Burglary Countdown initiatives, the WA Liveable Neighbourhoods and Alcohol Plan are more complex, costly and do not necessarily provide an immediate affect on crime. Yet despite the “costs” of implementing these schemes, the “benefits” are more long term. Unlike the Neighbourhood Watch, Operation Burglary Countdown and other situational crime preventative schemes which targets a specific crime, the Liveable Neighbourhoods and Alcohol Plan aims to eliminate or control possible significant factors that attribute to the causes criminal behaviour therefore providing a slow, but long lasting cultural change within the community. Unfortunately there does not seem to be any direct reference or application of criminological theory within the public policies of the community based situational crime prevention, the socio-political initiatives or within the criminal sentencing process, yet the importance of criminology in the WA criminal law remains. Without criminological theories our WA criminal law and its justice system would not be a self conscious, reflective process and therefore may create blind spots which would develop over time with the changes in society.

It has been a while since I've written something substantial and not just mobile blog it. Quite a few things have happened since last time I blogged.

Injured Ankle
Auuugh golly! the bane of my existence, my right ankle. It always plays up when I am down. But on the bright side, it is a blessing in disguise as it has allowed me to... well, do nothing. Which is something that I've not done since probably around November last year. Life just keeps on speeding up with work and sporting commitments almost every week night that being:

Monday - Mixed Soccer with the Bananaroos
Tuesday - Mixed Netball with Team Rowdy
Wednesday - Indoor beach volleyball with Sons and Daughters of Pineapple
Thursdays - Sometimes blading/running around the river
Fridays - Indoor beach volleyball with Sons of Pineapple
Saturday - Sometimes run to burns beach

... and then staying out late on Fridays and Saturday nights.

I was pretty much burning the candle at both ends. Actually... looking at my schedule listed neatly there makes me wonder if that was/is even possible? How the hell do I do that and not die? Well yea, I guess that is what happened. Something had to give eventually. I will admit though, I have to be forced home... I wasn't going to stop. Its like a wave... you pick up momentum and it the swell just keeps on going. Partly is that, sport is the only thing that clears my head these days and plus I am scared of losing fitness/getting faaaaat.

My New Car
Hoorah for my new car! I have had it for about 1 month now! It is the new Honda Jazz GLi (safety pack). I got it in Helios Yellow and his name is Hugo! LOL this is why I love him (I wrote this to a few of my friends on email):

"Awwwww I love love love love Hugo! Its love at first sight girrrrrls!!!

He is sexy (nice body),
He is smooth (very charming),
He is intelligent (tells me when I need to get gas, how long ive been driving),
He is safe (has the safety pack option),
He is sensitive to my needs (when I drive faster he turns up the music, and when I drive slower, he turns it lower for more intimacy)
He will come with me where ever I want to go! My ideal travelling partner... my... ideal guy."

The actual buying process was stressful as. I knew what car I wanted. After considering Mazda 2 and the Ford Fiesta the Jazz was actually quite a shoe in. I loved the shape of it, and I've always wanted a Honda ever since seeing Asimo in Amsterdam at the AutoRai. (Asimo is soooo cooool) Anywho. Getting the right price was the issue. You would think with the GFC and the decease in sales of cars that they would be more accommodating to the consumer. HA! You guessed wrong! Some dealerships were still playing the game. No movement in prices etc. But after some shopping around I found him! The experience was scary. There is this game to be played. It stressed me out big time.

When it came to signing the papers... I was so over it. I was so over the whole game. So I wasn't as excited as I thought I would be. When the salesman walked over to the manager asking for the price I wanted I just sat there exhausted. Exhausted from work, from ATP, from sports from this whole thing. He returned cold faced. "ehh" I thought. They didn't accept my first offer, I doubt they would accept this one because I didn't budge that much. But he offered his hand and said
"congratulations."
I starred at his open hand, waiting for me to accept it.
"what did I just do?"
I asked myself. I took his hand, shook it, and shook myself into reality.
"damn. I just bought a car."

3 weeks later... and I finally picked up Hugo. When I arrived at the dealership, I saw him waiting for me... I squirmed like a kid... I was bursting with excitement... but I felt foolish feeling so, so... I told the kid in me to keep quiet. The first drive was nerve wrecking more than anything, but as we got nearer to home, I was able to appreciate it. *sigh* He's a hot car. I love him. I'm going to use this opportunity to thank Big John, Farhan and Will for giving me extensive car/bargaining advice. Thanks to them for being so patient with me, and pretty much nurture me as I grew some balls.

Bits and Pieces
Hrmm... what else has happened. Well from my blog I guess you can see that lovely whacked and quirky things have happened. I've gone to quite a few shows lately which back in the day when I had time I would have blogged my reviews on them. Instead I shall list them here:

Midsummer's Night Dream - Love this play. Would watch it a 3rd time.

Phantom of the Opera - It was sooo good. My heart swooned at the music, though the phantom was a little but too emo/pansy for my liking. The tone was quite different to that in the movie with Gerard Butler.

War of the Roses - Despite the strength in acting, I wouldn't want to see it again. Quite a challenging play to watch.

Cirque du Soleil - Got awesome seats for this, Julie and I had a ball. I forgot how much I loved this!

French Film Festival - Paris 36 - Good movie, great food and drinks afterwards!

Spanish Film Festival - Chef's Special - This is hilarious! Definitely recommend you watching it... the food was so-so, drinks were alright too.

Various Comedy Acts - Dylan Moran, Tim Minchin and Danny Boy - all where good and highly entertaining. Though I would rate Moran as the most entertaining because I was mighty exhausted after laughing so hard.

Pussycat Dolls/Lady Gaga - Awesome Concert!!!! Both acts could sing and dance... initially I was kinda meh about it, but once the lights dimmed, and the music cranked, I got excited.

Yea. that is a lot of stuff to have gone to... O wells! Here's to living life to the fullest!

I had to blog. I am feeling all squirmish, bubbly and goosepimpley all over despite the fact that I'm feeling quite warm. The news may seem minor to most, but for me it has changed my whole attitude and mood!

This semester at uni has been pretty damn stressful. "Good one" I would mutter to myself, "So much for choosing easy units to make your last semester at university less stressful." You see, I thought that since I've always done quite well in assignments as opposed to exams, and by choosing units that had no exams, it would allow me to have a enjoyable, stress-free last hoorah before I leave this institution. Instead, what I had done, was create a whole lot of "inter semester" stress in lieu of the lack of "intra" or "post" semester stress with the whole exam period. So... this whole semester has been a count down of assignments.

1. Criminology - 50% weight
2. Advanced Torts Assignment 1 - 50% weight
3. Employment Law - 30% weight
4. Advanced Torts Assignment 2 - 50% weight.

Disgusting really. I have so far laboured away at 3, and am working on the last Advanced Torts Assignment which is due this Friday.

Last night I got a message from a classmate of mine from Criminology, asking how I went with the assignment as himself and a friend had failed it. I totally went into freaking out mode. I had not gone to lectures since the Lecturer merely reads off his very detailed notes, and I had rationalised it with "well, I can spend better time doing my assignments than going to the lectures." I then remembered another friend who had done the unit before telling me that the Lecturer was a hard marker. So... I messaged another classmate who had done the unit and asked how he went. He said he passed, giving me some light of hope. What was a night of me being pumped up full of stress from my Torts Assignment and other matters, had just increased 1000x fold.

I couldn't think. I couldn't read. I played poker on facebook and won 2000 though. (YAY). But still I had a sick feeling in my stomach... I sick feeling that hey, I might just scrape through to pass this semester, or just miss out on passing. I have been working so very hard lately with no avail. Nothing has been going my way... everyone is on my back for something or some reason and I truly feel like cracking.

This morning I woke up early, packed my bags and went to uni to collect the assignment. I had done it such a long time ago, I couldn't remember what I had written. I remember changing my assignment on the advice of the 2 classmates who had failed... which made me feel like stabbing myself in the stomach. "Idiot!" So I went to the law office, collected it... and waited till I got well outside the law building so I don't feel the ghosts of past law students who had become politicians, lawyers... judges, looming over me and my mark, laughing and saying "You never had it in you little girl."

So I was at the mid point from the law building and reid library, I opened my assignment to my first page a few ticks here and there (but in law school, a whole lot of ticks could still lead you to a mere CR... a puzzling anomaly). There was a comment at the bottom of my introduction "Good. You have told me what you set out to do." Throughout my paper there were comments like "Good Show me," few of them were points to note like "This is a major rationale of criminal justice systems worldwide," and "At the Fed Level, Eg the 'Alcopop' tax." But me being me, I am always second guessing myself, there is always this strong sense of self doubt. So I get to the final page. There is this HUGE feedback comment. I saw the mark and let a sigh of relief.

"I passed!" I told Will over the phone. I had promised to tell him my mark. "Thats good!" he said. "I got a 73!" I blurted out... I couldn't hold it any longer! I was soooo happy. Finally... something to demonstrate to me that "No look Anna, your not a total lost." I felt and feel so relieved. I feel like this sense of vindication... like "Yeah! Take it pompus law school! The non-conforming law student CAN bring something worthwhile to the table."

Yea... I'm beeming. But now, I should really get to my Advanced Torts Assignment. I promised myself that I would work extra hard on this assignment in "celebration" of my small, but huge personal achievement. *Hoorah!*

A valuable experience for sure.

I didn't really know what to expect from visiting WA's male maximum security prison. I didn't know what they were willing to show a group of law students. But... man did my flight/fight responses get a work out.

They started off the tour with showing us the visiting centre. They showed us where prisoners would have their contact visits. A table with the prisoner sitting on one side, and his visitors on the other. We were told that the prisoners wear a grey tracksuit when they are out seeing visitors, once they finish with the visit, they have to change back into their green tracksuits. I think this is for security purposes as well as ID purposes. Like... since they change tracksuits, it prevents the prisoner from bringing things from inside the prison to the visitor, and like wise, prevents the prisoner being able to bring things from the outside back into the prison. ID wise, any prisoner that is wearing green and is outside of the prison, obviously is not supposed to be there.

After that we were taken to the "inside" part of the prison where we were shown where the prisoner's wait to be taken outside to the visitor's centre. When we walked in, there were some men in green tracksuits handling the exchange of greens and greys...I was like "woah... they are actual prisoners... and they are standing only a few metres away from us." Little did I know at the time that this was not going to be the first and closest interaction we would have with them.

We were taken into the grounds of the prison, they showed us the infirmary, the cells, the kitchen, laundry, different living blocks around the prison. It was an eye opener for sure. The prisoners are the ones who are in the kitchen cooking the meals (and decent meals!) They were also the ones doing the laundry... its quite similar to what you see on Prison Break. Only... a lot less darker and gloomy. It is interesting how prisoners get an allowance, and from that they have to pay for their food etc. Meals are about 2 bucks each... and as I mentioned before the meals are quite decent! They have to pay for phone calls and other items (eg magazines, chips etc)

Sensory overload... every time we were walking pass or standing near prisoners (which was a lot of the time) I was on my guard. Its amazing what a label can do to your opinion of a person. there was a little incident where when we had just walked into the central grounds of the prison where there were a few wolf whistles coming from one of the living quarters. there was no one on the grounds at the time, but they could see us from their cells...I kinda sent a shiver down my spine...like "omg... its really like that?"

There was another time when we were walking to another living block, and we walked down this path where there was a fence on both sides. Some prisoners approached the fence and started to talk to us, asking "where you guys from?" "what are you doing here?" "oh coming in to join us?" I thought I'd would have been pretty brave, would have walked with my head up high or looked them in the eye. But I wasn't. I walked pass them with my head down, or I just looked forward. I was...pretty confused as to how to respond to them, and DO I respond to them? My friend Andrew did. He told them we were law students, and some of them responded with a "Aw! so when I get out of here, I might see you when I need some free advice."

Overall these guys get a lot of autonomy during the day. They can do what they want really, wonder where ever they want. But they are dictated what to eat, where to eat, where to shower and when to leave and stay within their cells. Like I said before, it was not as gloomy or dark as what I had expected, if anything else, it looks like a cool boarding school. But nevertheless, it is still a prison, your freedoms are taken away, and you have to live among criminals. What I was curious about was, whether there was all the dark silent violence that you see on Prison Break or Shawshank Redemption... I didn't really ask.

Things like re offending seemed to be an issue. Which made me realise that even though the Prison system is seen to be a chance for the criminal to be rehabilitated, it seems that the prison system fails to do so. Our tour guide said things like "You see them in here and then released, 2 years later, they are back here," and "You see a prisoner in here, years later you will see his son, its a family business." I may be just an idealistic law student, but it appears that the prison system is flawed in its attempts to rehabilitate the criminal in order to live within society once they leave... I Guess this then leads into my criminology assignment...which I should really get a start on... since I am all rev'ed up to go since I started writing this blog entry.

I am grateful for the opportunity to see the Prison. Visitors don't get the chance to see this. Lawyers only see the conference rooms. But here, I was able to walk through the grounds of the prison. See where they ate, slept, where they go to work. I got to walk among them and be scared out of my wits as a prisoner would have felt if they had just entered the prison for the first time. There is a high level of stress in that prison. You are always on you guard. Despite the fact that they can feed themselves decent meals for about 6 bucks a day, have free medical care (if you have a heart attack, the state pays), no rent to pay, and tafe and university education available at hand... the mere fact that your in this place is bad enough, and I would never want to step foot in such a place.

This is strange... this phenomenon.

I had started to realise my friends in my China List on MSN started having (L) China in thier nicknames. I didn't really think much of it at first. I just thought that they legitimately loved China.

But as I was studying, Quentin messaged me on MSN and said: "put (L) China in ur msn... it is for the olympic games."

*DING!* Lightbulb appeared and I realised that this (L) China was not just an expression of my friends' love for the country, but as it turns out it is some sort of youth political response to all the negative coverage of China from the news.

I still am not sure as where I stand on the issue politically. I just fully (L) China at the moment, and I am excited about the olympic games.

I doubt that this (L) China will make any difference. I think it would be just as effective as (L) Australia on Austalia day, or when Australia beat Japan in the Fifa World Cup in 2006.

But... if you want more on this interesting... youth cultural movement have a look at this link:
http://shanghaiist.com/2008/04/16/nationalist-netizens-on-msn-messenger-heart-china.php

It seems to explain it pretty well.

When did Art become cruel and repugnant?

Ok... I am a pretty tolerant person. I understand that Art is a vice where people can express certain emotions, feelings, explore issues that push the boundaries of what is conservative by social definition.

But... when I recieved this email from the Voiceless Animals Association about the so called "Artist" Guillermo Vargas Habacuc, I was just shocked and disgusted on how far some people are willing to push the boundaries in the name of art.

It has been alleged that some time last year Habacuc had approached and paid children to chase and capture an abandoned dog. He then took the dog and tied it up to a wall at an art gallery in Managua. He then left the dog there, in the art gallery with no food or water. He left it there for people to walk by to look and watch the dog die. This is what he called as "art."

What is most concerning is that the Central American Biennial exhibition is considering his "art" and has invited him to repeat his "art" at the 2008 Biennial in Hondras.

What can we do about it? Sign a petition!!!! Go to the link below or click here.

http://www.petitiononline.com/ea6gk/petition-sign.html

Ive signed it... and if you find this repulsive, and question whether this is 'art' please sign it too!!!

Does these photos capture any essence of art? Looks like cruelty to me.

Aaaawww... this was such a great performance! So glad that I did not miss out on it! I would have really regretted it if I did!

Our seats were mega awesome. It was close to the stage and in the middle! HehEHEe... the fact that they were merely $35 made it even sweeter!

I must say... It took a while for me to get used to it. It has been a while since I've seen a stage performance. But yea... once the 3rd/4th song was on, I was totally submerged into the story! The actors had great voices... the guys (Chris and James) had a real "masculine" presence on stage. Kim (the "Miss Saigon") had such a beautiful voice. It sounded sweet, young, innocent.

Similarities to Madame Butterfly

The story was quite interesting. Very similar to Madame Butterfly. Except in this story, it appears that Chris genuinely loved Kim, as opposed to B.F Pinkerton's feelings towards Cio-Cio San. In both stories there is a suitor for Kim/Cio-cio San. In both stories I think the audience can see that if she had decided to stay with the suitor Thuy/Prince Yamadori, then she would have had a comfortable yet ordinary life. I think the beauty of the characters of Kim/Cio-Cio san is their absolute love and faith for their foreign lovers. That against all odds they are willing to commit themselves for an extraordinary life for themselves or inevitably for their sons.

I feel bad for them... mainly because... I have a feeling that I would do the same thing, and the thing is almost based on principle and feelings rather than rationale thought. Like seriously... will you ever see them again? Seriously... will they come back for you? Sadly... most cases... no. Your just a summer fling that happened yesterday.

Other than that sad note.... it was a beautiful show! Bring on more musicals!!! Bring on Phantom of the Opera!!! When will it ever come to PERTH!??!?!??!

Ahhhhhhhhh!!! This was a pretty good night out! I love Maroon 5. When I was in China, in Hangzhou especially, I didn't get a chance to speak to Will that often. But one night when I had the chance to talk to him, he said to me:

"I called because I have a surprise for you..."
"Oh... really??? a surprisee??"
"Yup"
"whaaatttt surprise??"
"I got us tickets..."
"Tickets?!?!?! to what?"
"A band you love..."

*I sit on my bed looking out of our dorm window at the "Zhejiang Mountain" in deep thought*

"HrmMm... I band that I like... I don't know..."
"I'll give you a hint, its name has a colour..."

*Gobsmacked....jaw drops... this is not just pure coincidence is it?*

"MAROON 5?!?!?!?!"
"Yup!"

The thing is, before I had left for China and just after Justin Timberlake, I was randomly talking to Will in the car one day about concerts. I said to him... "I rekon Maroon 5 would be awesome live, as they are a band... and yea, all thier songs are sick... would you go?" Will said that he would if they came... but at the time, neither of us had any idea they were intending to come to Perth! Pure coincidence or what?!??! Hehe.

Their music rocks! 很好听!The Maroon 5 crew consisted of Will, Yorma, Kean and I. We bumped into Matt and Deano as well. Unfortunately we were unable to meet up with Shaz and Jon... but yea....

The songs that I was really looking forward to hear and got really amped when they played, were: "I won't go home without you," "Sweet Goodbye," "This love," "She Will be loved," "It makes me wonder".... ahhh all of them really!

Adam Levine... oozes sex appeal on the video clips. But on stage. He is completely different. He is just your usual rocker really. Dressed in trendy black jeans and a fitted black t-shirt he looked almost emo really. Different to how he's dressed in promos (eg. check our the cover of their recent album). There were moments when he did engage me and the general audience such as when he dimmed down the band, and just had the drummer do the beat to "I won't go home without you" and he made the crowd sing with him:

"Its not over tonight, just give me one more chance to make it right, I may not make it through the night, I won't go home without you..."

It sounded awesome, and Kean was smart enought to get an awesome recording on his phone!

Other than that, it was a different kind of concert than the other ones I have been to. I mean I went to Gwen Stefani and Justin Timberlake, both were "pop" styles and had dancing, visuals... the whole package really. Maroon 5, whilst the music was great, vocals were siiiick and it was cool to hear them live, performance wise, it is just the band performing. As most rock gigs are like I assume.

One cool thing that we did that night, was... well we ended up standing and watching the whole show in the isle and not from our seats. Our seats were pretty good, but the isle.. well that was better. There was not someone directly in front of you.. which for me meant I could see the stage! There was one time where I micheviously suggested that we all walk down and stand near the front in the isle... Kean being double michevious agreed and led the way. It was soo cool how close we were... but the ushers caught on, and started to ask people to see thier tickets... so we walked in the opposite direction and eventually found our sweet spot, which was in the isle right in front of the ligthing and sound system. Therefore not blocking anyone's view and getting a really siick spot to see the performance. = )

Another cool thing, Will's/Megan's/Kean's friend Dave... yea... siiick... hooked us up with beverages and desert! = )

Reading over my blog entries from November 2007 till Feburary 2008 made me realise how quickly time passed.

Things that seem to have happened a few weeks ago, actually happend months ago... Reading my blog made me realise that. I guess I have been guilty of re-living the past and relishing on whatever I can savour from my time in China. I loved it... so sue me if I want to hold onto it. = )

Ok... 3 words that will sum up my condition... "Reverse Cultural Shock":
"Reverse cultural shock is actually more difficult to deal with than the original cultural shock experienced when entering a new land. This is because most people don't anticipate the need for adjustment when returning to their home country."

Little quirks from my blog entry. I apolgise for the incorrect spelling of names. I have seen myelf misspelling Quentin's name wrong on so many levels... hahaha. Gabriel and Hanalee I have spelt so wrong as well... EEP! Ive even spelt Zhejiang Daxue wrong a few times... though I think they might have been sevre typos.!

My Chinese... LOL well its getting there. I am really furstrated with the fact that I have really high expectations of myself, and I really thought that I could come back and speak good coversational Chinese. I can speak... basic.. and thats about it. But... I guess what is a bit rewarding is that all the beginner's books, programs that I have bought or downloaded I can understand most of the content in it. So I guess that means I have made some progress.

Things I will NOT miss about China. Well first of all... I will not miss the spitting. The hacking, and that noise that comes from your the back of your throat or nose, I am not surewhere its from... I will defiantely not miss that. The smoking... awww I am soo happy we are back in Australia... my lungs can breathe again. The pushyness... well I dont like being pushed around in general, but in China I think I got used to it. Also some of the rudeness... there are some rude people... but thats how it is in most places in the world.

Things I WILL miss about China. How cheap things are....tasty food that you can walk down the street and pick up.

I will miss the random Chinese candy! I will miss the jaozi or dumplings!!! AWWW I miss the ones from the canteen at Zhejiang! I will miss the baozi or steamed buns that I would eat every morning in Hangzhou from the shitang before class, I will miss the 1.50 Kuai Ice cream that I always bought every day from the same little shop a few doors down from our dorms in Beijing... (the guy rocks! everytime I walk in there, he knows what I want, he gets the icecream out before I ask... and If there are time when I cannot find it, he will find it for me. AHHH!!!) I will miss Beijing Kao ya (peking duck) I will miss Nai Cha (Bubble tea/Milk Tea).

I will miss trying all those awesomely packaged drinks that only once you take a sip of it, you realise it tastes like shit.

I will miss the pomelo!

I will miss the lifestyle of being a foreign student learning Chinese. Living in the dorms and being able to go to class in your Pjs (which I ended up doing in Beijing). Trying to talk to locals... being lost in translation...getting away with things because you are foreign... Meeting people from different countries, cultures and languages. Learning about the differences between Australia, China and everywhere else. All those little cultural idiosyncracies facinate me and I just get filled up with .... I don't know... awe?

Clubbing!! awww I will miss the clubbing, how stupidly cheap drinks are! Transportation via taxi being hell cheap. In Hangzhou... I miss S.O.S and Maccas... perfect stumbling/sobering up distance from the dorms.... I will miss the bikes!!! Jeeemes! CHINAAA! I will miss K TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was not really big on K tv... I thought it was kinda pussy and like I mean I would do it for kicks and have heaps of fun... but once in China... I've become addicted to it! I love it!!! miss it already! got huge withdraw symptoms. The Ktv ROCKS! There are plasma/flatscreens there are party lights, there are tamberines, there are cool computers there that help you select the songs... they serve food!!!!

I will miss the freedom. Being able to think of something to do and on the spot be able to organise it and do it! Being able to have the carefee attitude of "yeaaa why not?" and there is nothing or no one there to stop you from doing it. Being spontaneous! I love it! AAAAHHH... CHINAAA!!!

Oh wells... thats my reflection of China. Wo xiang zhongguo!

AUgh!!!!

Last night we went to a club, BabyFace.. and augh!!! the music was alright... but it was the first night where I left disappointed.

First and foremost, the guys there are all old sleazes!!! they are soo annoying! It makes me miss Hangzhou even MORE! the guys here would be like 40 years old and would be trying to dance with you!

There was these bunch of guys who kept on dancing around our group (we consisted of mainly all girls and lincon) One of them, as he walked past me, grabbed my singlet strap and pulled it down! I hit him and was like "What the... F***!" and he just gave me this pathetic grin. After that I was ready to hit home. It was too much.

Not only that, I bought a green necklace yesterday... beads and all and it was soo pretty! I have a matching ring... but at Babyface... It broke!!!!! = ( The girls helped me find most of the beads, so hopefully when I get to Beijing or when I go home, I can maybe fix it... or make the necklace again but use fishing wire or something.

Anywho... At the moment I am going to live cheaply. This morning, I went out for breakfast with Fern and Lincon and had dumplings which were like 3 kuai... and hopefully for dinner I will get to have Taiwanese pancake or maybe some noodles from next door which is el cheapo and el yummo bummo!!!

I am packing... and I am slowly getting nervous.

What happens if I forget something? Or... how are we going to get from the airport to the Uni Campus? I messaged the co-ordinator last night and asked whether a shuttle will be organised since there are about 9 people arriving at the same time... but there has been no response.

I guess I am concerned. I don't want to be cheated! I feel a bit vulnerable because I don't know any Chinese, and it will be impossible for me to figure out directions and numbers if they are all written in the Chinese script. Every dollar or cents count. I haven't worked in ages. But I know I can handle the money issues IF I am not cheated and I budget well.

I am also nervous about the classes. I haven't been in a non-law class for 4 years now. It is going to be weird. I forget how it is to participate in class. (Well procedure is an exception, but each time it was your week to be a 'discussant' in John Fiocco's tute, every student would suffer some degree of post-dramatic stress syndrome.)

But yea... I think my nervousness is more so leaning towards the safety factor. Having Will not there is contributor as well, because I have gotten so used to collaborating the plan of attack with him...and partly because I will miss him heaps!

Oh well... I better get back to packing!

This is sooo cute!!! Such a cute love story. If you don't know what I am talking about go to: http://www.nygirlofmydreams.com/

*sigH*... Shy guy takes the NY subway. Sees the girl of his dreams, too shy to muster up the courage to talk and he lets her walk away. BUT he then goes and creates this website with a sketch of her and him and where he saw her, asking page viewers to help him find her. Its sooooo romantic! SOOOO cute..

It turns out, that his efforts were not at a loss! He found her, and she ended up being... YUP... an Aussie!!!! They are both so cute! Shes got this sweet, funky. Hes just as cute as a button! You can find his story on youtube at:

The guy Patrick Moberg is quite a cool artist! You can check out his work at http://www.patrickmoberg.com

It is such a sweet story, very Sliding Doors. Being a public transport commuter, you could almost imagine that happening to you! I think its romantic? What do you think? some people say its more like scary and stalkerish?

"I'm bringing sexy back ... YEAH!"

"She's like a model, except shes got a lil more ass!"

"You need no Maybelline, cause your a beauty queen, no need no L'oreal, cause bitch you bad as hell..."

OOOOHHH JT was sooo good!!! SOO SOOO SOOO GOOD! I think it is also because we were sooo close to the front being in Gold Admission Standing! SO close we could almost lick him!

The only prob for me was that I was too short... Luckily I was wearing my Country Road wedges... if I wasn't wearing those... I wouldn't be able to see ANYTHING! I DO wish I was taller... and there were some really annoying girls who had weaseled and pushed their way to the font... That hella annoyed me... cause all of a sudden I couldnt see anything! I was like "Friggin hell!!!"

But yea... the music was awesome!!! The Choreography was sooo funky, and his whole stage work and presentation was outstanding... Like instead of having 2 big screens of himself so that everyone can see him, he had these see through sheets that had a projector like video feed of himself. It made the stage LOOK sexy, as it was kinda like curtains draped from the bedroom. = )

Justin... awwwwww.... I don't know... hes pretty cool, down to earth, kinda has that cool quirky humour... Sharon and I looked at each other and were like
"He's just like us!"
"Yea! He's on the same wave length!"

He made some funny comments on the Australian wildlife, and his foreigner's observations on our Magpies... HAHAHAHAHAH yeaa... they are friggin scary, we all know that... but I guess because we have all grown up with them, we are used to it... It was still funny to hear it. Such a mundane comment about Australian life... but soo true!

Overall I think the concert was awesome! The songs were reaally good... there was a cool intro to What goes around comes around (he did a piano intro). It was really cool to see him doing his thing on the piano, guitar and like this guitar piano thingo... = D the crowd was pretty good too, VERY VERY LOUD!!!! Girls were going crazy! I even heard the guys go pretty crazy when JT first came out. I mean... yea.. the opening song is always the best... you fully get pumped! I get this rush which makes me temporarily insane for a bit... Your just screaming... and soo happy to see this famous person from all the way of the other side of the world 5 metres in front of you!

There were times when he would grace our side of the stage, where he would just look in the crowd and its like "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!! OMGGGG!!! He just looked at me!!!! He sawww meeee!!!" hahahh well thats what I felt... Im sure most of the crowd felt that too! hehehee.

But yea... it was awesome!!! thanks to Will for taking the fotos for us... Cause... If I were to take the photos, you would have heads everywhere in the photo!!! Will took some really really really fantastic videos as well... where you could almost smell JT! You can see his moves!!!

Anyway... I better go study!!! hehehee! At least I have all the memories, the photos, videos, and my SexyBack Short shorts!!!

P.S Congrats to Karina and Travis = )

(This is a pic of me and my SexyBack short shorts... hahah)

Well so much has happened.

I've just finished all my assessments for the year! Now all I gotta do is start revising for the exams... crap... the year has gone by so fast... I really cannot believe it aye.

Happy Birthday Will for October 2!!! Sadly because Will is now a working man, we could not spend the day together.. though I still was able to see him, as Will had left his wallet in my Soccer bag on Monday night, and could not get into work without it. So I made an early trek to the City before uni to see him at 8.30am! But Friday night is Will's night! I'm taking him for a super nice dinner!!! and then we are gonna head in for a super night out at ASIA COCKTAIL at Metros Northbridge.

Back tracking now... The long weekend that had just passed was a busy one and one that we sooo needed! The week before I had 3 assignments to get done in 7 days... AAAAHH!!! Then I had work at Country Road 9.30am-9pm on Thursday, Work at Calverley Johnston on Friday 9-5 and then again at Country Road on Saturday 9-5...

THE LONG WEEKEND
Sat night we went to Kean's place for a BBQ... for... his birthday! Oh... i stuffed my face with thier salad and the pine nuts... and yea... now ive got this bitter taste in my mouth after I eat... all coz i ate so much pine nuts!

Sunday Will took me out for a drive down to Mundaring Weir. The weather was alright, the clouds threatened to rain on us but never really did. We ate pizza at Little Caesar's which was Yuper YUMMO! I DO recommend it, the desert pizza rocks aye!

That night we went to the Ruby Room at Burswood. It was really good! I have not been out clubbing and dancing in ages! I soo miss it! I miss just singing and dancing my lil heart out! It was really good to catch up with everyone as well. Really good especially after being a little hermit doing all those friggin assignments.

Monday Will and I went to the Royal Show with Vodafone Drew and Amy. Geez Ive not been since High School... and it was pretty good! Amy and I bought the "new woman" showbag which had 3 mags and the most important part... Peter Alexander Slippers! Im sooo bringing it to China....

Yes... China!

The Decision to go to China

During my period of turmoil with assignments galore, I submitted my application to go to China for 10 weeks to learn Mandarin... Yea.. I was "ummm-ing" and "aaahh-ing" for soo long. I had filled out the application and was about to submit it last year... but after rationalising the costs etc... I did not submit it then.

This year... it is as if all caution has been thrown into the wind... and I submitted it in! Megan was a BIG help. I was 95% ready to go... but when Megan was like"YES ill come" it made that 5% for me to take the plunge!

So Ive booked my tickets with Stevie wonder!! (Steven Moylan) and at this point of time, I am leaving on 22 November!!! I should be home around the 4th of Feb next year... aaaaah... hopefully I'll be able to speak another language! Im soo excited now!

The W660i

Will being a working man now, decided that he wanted to go on a plan... so yea... that would pretty much make my 300 free mins on my Optus prepaid worthless, as he would move to either Vodafone or 3. So I decided to move with him to the 3 network... and with that decision, I got a new fone!!!! the Sony Ericsson W660i! Its sooo HOT! The coolest feature is the "track ID" function where the phone will record the song playing in the club or what you hear on the radio and it will tell you the name of the song and the artist! Soooo cool!.

HAIRSPRAY

This movie is SOOO GOOD! I was like smiling and bopping the WHOLE time! I sooo wanted to jump into the screen and start singing and dancing with them all. An WOW little Zac Efron... what a little hottie. LOL Id make him my toyboy. LOL Go see it! really really good! I think I prefer it over Dreamgirls! Its so much fun to watch!.

Gwen Stefani

The Sweet Escape Tour

WooooHooo, Yeeeehoooo,
WooooHooo, Yeeeehoooo,
WooooHooo, Yeeeehoooo,

"If I could escape,

and recreate this place as my own world,
And I could be your favorite girl forever,
perfectly together

And tell me boy, now wouldn't that be sweet..."

I LOVE GWEN!!!!!!!!!!!!! Her concert was sooo AWESOME!!!!! What a FANTASTIC day I had yesterday!!!

My date with Sharon
Yesterday morning... ewww I had procedure discussion to do... and I was fully stressing and shitting myself because I had not prepared for it very well. 2 hours cramming beforehand, not a good idea. But once it was over... OOH yea.. I met up with Sharon at the guild and headed down to her house. We picked up her diary, we put our Harajuku Lovers definition tops on (Sharon wears "Angel" and I wear "Baby" and headed out for a yummo bummo girly lunch date at Char Char Bull... Niiiiiiiice streak they got... NO BULL! ;P

After that Sharon took me to the House of Ernest for some hair treatment, which was SOOOO relaxing... though I wished it could have lasted longer. It left my hair silky and shiny! But they blew dry my hair really flat =( but heeey... $25 buckaroos well spent.

We then made our way to professionail to do our nails, I got some cool pattern painted on my thumbs in the spirit of Gwenie! After that it was already 5pm something, so we made our way to takkas for some Dinner.

The Concert
Soon enough (thanks to Sharon's awesome driving skills) we got awesome parking a Burswood and lined up for our Gwen Merchandise. Sharon and I both ended up purchasing a Gwen Stefani prison like top with "the sweet escape" written on the back. We then found our seats and enjoyed the music from Gym Class Heroes.

OOH man... when it was Gwen's time... it was sooo AWESOME!!!! at first we saw this spot light moving among the crowd, and a faint siren was ringing. It was only until Sharon pointed out to me that Gwen's harajuku girls Love, Angel, Music and Baby were running around and hiding from the prison warden!!! they were sooo coooolll!!! Then all of a sudden they ran off and the music started playing, the intro to Sweet Escape started and the lights just exploded on the stage with Gwen coming out of a golden safe!!!! was soooooooooo COOOOOLLL!!!

The music, the stage production, the dancers, the costumes were SOOOOO full of energy and Sharon and I had soo much fun!!! Due to my height I had problems seeing the stage and the big screen, but thanks to the trusty camera that Will bought me, I was able to take photos and video clips by lifting the camera above the crowd!!

What was reaaaaally awesome was that, after one song Gwen jumped off the stage and ran through the crowd to where the profesional cameras were, and started singing Cool as she then ran to the very back of the crowd and met the audience!!! IT WAS SOOO COOL... she caarreedd.I found that she is quite quirky... very cute, very cool and sooo damn hot!! I loved her costumes = D

The songs that went OFF where:
  • The Sweet Escape
  • Yummy
  • Rich Girl
  • Hollaback Girl
  • 4 In the Morning
  • Luxurious
  • Now that You Got It
  • Orange County Girl (Sharon's fave)
  • The Real Thing
  • Wind it Up
  • What You Waiting for?
  • Cool
The Stage during What you waiting for?

More Stage Pics, You can see Gwen with Love, Angel, Music and Baby

Singapore
Fabulous shopping, eating, clubbing

July 12 - July 21

2007

Ahhhh Singapore. What a blast. I must admit this was one wickid-ass holiday. I have decided to write the details of our Singapore trip regardless of the fact that I do not have the photos to go with it. A week has passed and I think it would be better that I recount the events that had passed in Singapore before my head starts making up memories.

The Flight
Will and I make our way to Singapore on Tiger Airways. The way there we were bursting with energy and excitement... well I was. Will was his usual calm cool and collected self. The flight itself was what I had expected. There were 3 seats on either side of the very very narrow isle. No food, you gottsa pay for insta noodles, sandwiches etc.

On the way back, it was quite fun, having Adrian sitting with us rather than some random. Things were mighty friendly on board, luckily Will n Adrian were sitting next to each other, otherwise I'd be in the line of fire, and probably be scarred for life, forever in the foetal position. Clem and Alicia unfortunately could not find seats near us, but they were nevertheless together!

Traveler's Tip: If you are to fly Tiger Airways, DO pre-select your seats. Departing from Perth, you do get your own separate queue to check-in, which is A LOT faster. Plus you don't have to worry about whether you will be placed next to your traveling buddies or not = D

The Accommodation
Robertson Quay Hotel... what can I say... hahahah lets just start off with, first come first serve. Will and I were the first to check into the hotel, we believe due to that, we had minimal problems with our room. After that, it went downhill. The difference between the rooms were so great that hey... it ended up being quite comical.

Adrian checked in realised he did not have a fridge in his room (after hanging out in our room), Drew and Katie arrived and were not given a fridge, shower curtain, and the lights just did not work... I think there were similar disparities in the other rooms, but we did not hear about it. In the latter part of our holiday, Adrian and Chia Hui realised why their bathroom was always wet and why ours were nice and dry, Will and I had the luxury of having a little wall around our shower, whereas they didnt.

So Will and I had the no problem room...the only thing that bugged us (and the rest of the group) was that they were EXTREMELY small and the bathrooms... HA even for me was too small. When we say small... this is what we mean... basic toilet, wash basin and shower. Room for one, everything so damn squished that even when you go to sit on the toilet you have to sit on an angle because the wash basin is protruding into your leg/sitting space . From the guys POV from what I've heard... they have had to learn how aim and pee diagonally while half asleep and hungover...

The general cleanliness of the rooms were to standard. I have stayed at some swaanky places like Bunker Bay which was rooms to die for... luxurious to the max, but yea. Once you become accustomed to how small the room and bathrooms are, you begin to settle and enjoy the place... by the second night we were calling it home.

We were given complimentary hot breakfasts every morning. It was the same standard baked beans, eggs, toast, sausage buffet style with tea, coffee or OJ for drinks. There was the choice of corn flakes, but Will and I never went for it. I really enjoyed going downstairs for juice and then meeting up with the rest of the sleepy-eyed gang.

Traveler's Tip: Robertson Quay is excellently located next to Clarke Quay, the heart of the nightlife in Singapore. There is also a small shopping centre across the street which has a supermarket inside which is great for your water, fruit and snack supplies. Around the corner there is a 7/11 where you can buy supplies, food, and your SIM card. Stay here if you plan on spending the majority of your time out and about, and not in your room. It is also ideal if you plan on going out to the clubs, restaurants and orchard road is only 5 Singapore dollars away by taxi.

The Shopping
Orchard Road is an eye opener for sure!!! Large Shopping complexes on either side of the street... gosh it was sooo good. There was so many things you can get there that you can't get in Australia... which is another good reason why the shopping is awesome. We were also lucky because we went during the Shopping Sales in Singapore. Which starts in June and ends in July. DISCOUNTS!!! yeaaaa... I was never really a huge shopper until we went to Singapore.

The places that I really enjoyed though were Bugis Street (Bargains galore baby... the handbags are soo good!!) and wait for it guys.... I can actually remember the name of it now... Far East . Far East... I went to 3 times... just coz it was sooo good. I should have bought more stuff aye. More clothes, more shoes! I only bought 4 pairs of dress shoes. Lucky I had Chia Hui there, She was my ultimate shopping buddie!!! = D

Traveler's Tip: If you want to go Shopping go during the Sales. June-July. Fully sick maite.

The Food
OMG... this is one of the things that I truly miss... the FOOD!!! Omg... soo good. I loved eating the noodles in soup...I loved the bread (Breadtalk is awesome) the sweet glossy buns, the buns with the sausage in it. the Cheesy ones... AAAAHH!!! I also loved the prata... ooh yeaa, and Teh Tarik and and and... oooh golly gosh my mouth is foaming just thinking of it all! OOh yea...we went during the Singapore Food Festival, so a lot of the Shopping complexes had food stalls... the best one was definitely the ground floor of
Ngee Ann City (the complex with Takashimaya). Places to go is definitely Lau Pa Sat in Chinatown. The satay strip is soo cool and kinda scary but yea... still very very yummo!!! The best meals I had were the ones we had at the Hawker places, I cannot forget the last breakfast we had, Will, Drew, Adrian Chia Hui and I walked 5 mins fro our hotel to have prata and teh tarik. Aw... was sooo good. The things you do need to try when you are in Singapore are:
  • Chicken rice
  • Chilli Crab
  • Fried Kuey Teow

  • High Tea
Speaking of High Tea. Ah yes... this was the only meal where all 12 of us got together and ate. Will made a booking at the Tiffin Room at the Raffles Hotel. This is a must go! The atmosphere and the experience is something that really makes this a great thing to do. The food was good, there was the fusion of the English traditions which included the tea, sandwiches, some pastry finger food like quiche and scones (scones.. ohh baby... i loved the scones); and Asian finger foods, things you would find at dim sum.

I think the best bit was the harp player and the waiters who open your chair when you want to get up or sit down and who re-lay your napkin when you sit. EhHEhehe...

There are many other cool places to go and eat in Singapore. Clarke Quay had heaps of interesting and novel places to eat such as Hooters and the like...

Traveler's tip: Eat food from the hawker places, they are el cheapo and el tasty!!! Oh and the Singapore Food Festival is always on during the month of July... so July is the ultimate month!

The Clubbing
The nightlife in Singapore. AWESOME. Makes coming back to Perth very hard. We either stayed out shopping till 10pm or we were out Clubbing! Places we went to:
  • Zouk
  • Ministry of Sound
  • St James Powerstation
  • Clinic
  • Cafe Del Mar
  • Gotham Penthouse
There are many stories that have come from our clubbing experiences in Singapore!!! HhAhahaha good times, good times...but since this entry is already super long, lets just do it bullet point style. In order of occurrence:

  • Zouk - Friday 13 July
    • The first night out for Will, me, Adrian and Chia Hui. Got Mega tanked with the 1 for 1 deals they have... mixed hennessy included in this deal!
    • Chia Hui and I danced crazily for a good hour together in the middle of the empty dance floor until we got ppl grooving!!!
    • Random chic coming into the toilets and first thing she says to me is "You have the same dress as me" (I indeed had the same dress, only mine was purple and hers was black)
    • Random chic hijacking my toilet as I walked into the stall. She followed me in, sat on the seat talked to me whilst she pee'd and then expected me to reciprocate. I kinda made up a story about gonna chuck. She walked out, leaving me be, BUT leaving me WITHOUT A SQUARE TO SPARE!!! No Toilet paper! Had to ask the girl in the stall next to me for some, she was a good Samaritan in a time of need, even though she herself was chucking.
    • Me loosing my little handbag containing my ID, credit card, bank card and phone when getting out of the taxi. Will drunkly commanded me to run after the taxi, which I did. BIG thanks to Adrian who found it on the road where the taxi had dropped us.
  • Gotham Penthouse - Tuesday 17 July
    • HAHAHAh another good time, we all stumbled into Gotham Penthouse on a usually quiet night out for Singapore and found Gotham Penthouse in Clarke Quay. Music was really good (y'know the stuff you hear on the radio) and the floor was empty!!! we all Boogied on down.
    • Some random group of Chics started a dance off!!! Trying to shake their booty, but we all were too good!!! We sent them home!!!!
    • The "performance" OOHHH yeaaa.... 4 Hunky, buffed, male dancers!!! WEEHEHEHEEE... Drew and Clem loved it... I swear I heard them screaming just as loud as we were!
    • Leaving Gotham Penthouse at the same time the dancers were!!! They allowed us to take a group pic with them... very nice guys.
  • St James Powerstation - Wednesday 18 July
    • Laaaaadies night!!!! Free entry and 5 coupons for mixed drinks! Though Chia Hui, Alicia and I decided to redeem our coupons all at once and got JUGS of Vodka and Ribena!!! oohhh yummoo!!!.... oooh... dangerous-o....
    • Danced to really good RnB music, danced out lil hearts out n gotten a photo taken.
    • Going for water... hahaha we went to get water from bar, barman ended up giving us 3 FREE waterfalls. He made us drink it at the bar, one at a time, and as we drank he lit up another glass of alcohol and poured it as we drank... it left us...well... smashed.
  • Zouk - Wednesday 18 July
    • Mambo Jumbo night? Lets just say... it was very very scary. Club packed with guys, doing co-ordinated hand actions to 80s music. O_o Ask Chia Hui for a good demonstration. (imagine something like Japanese Para-para dancing, only corny-ier)
Traveler's Tip: Definitely go clubbing on Wednesday nights!!! ladies nights rocks!!! Ministry of Sound is awesome, check out the studio 54 room, groovy baby! Clinic is good too, its located near MOS in Clarke Quay, and it is set out to look like a hospital. Adrian n I ordered Syringes Shots which was pretty awesome. = D Cafe Del Mar is located on Sentosa Island... the place is HOT, would have liked to gone at night, if you go, remember to bring your bathers = D

The Sightseeing
We did not do very much sightseeing. The places we went to were:
  • Merlion
  • Durian looking building
  • Raffle Hotel
  • Singapore Zoo
  • Singapore Night Safari
  • Sentosa Island
Ahhh the sightseeing... Yes... definately go see the Zoo, the Zoo in Singapore is very unique. With its open "enclosure" the animals (more so the monkeys) are almost free roaming. There is not cage enclosing them. Very nice... and the Night Safari... yea... pretty alright... pretty entertaining, similar to the Zoo except at night and you see all the nocturnal animals come alive.

Sentosa Island, yea... fun fun fun! It probably would have been a lot more fun if it was sunny, but nevertheless, we all had heaps of fun! We went down the Luge (or "loogie" as I mistakenly pronounced it), 4 times!!! The first time we went down, it was sooo fun, so when we came to Sentosa a second time (to go and check out Cafe Del Mar) we went down 3 times.

Conclusion
This was a really great trip, would love to do it again, and just have fun! Weird funny things that have emerged during the trip include:
  • Midge
  • Cuba
  • "... just like Adrian"
  • "Loogie"
  • Adrian and Chia Hui finding out about the cool convenient light switch.
  • Will and I finding out about how the bed side lamp worked.
  • "Yo Momma so fat..."
  • "Woah Woah Wee Wah." (Borat)
  • "Sexy time" (Borat)
  • "Lah" - everyone except me... I can't pull the "Lahs" very well.
  • Will's "victory" on the Luge - while on the home stretch Will was ecstatic that he was winning, he let go of the luge handles and swerved off the track, whilst Adrian passed him by.... giggling.
  • Adrian's sexy Spanish dancing at Cafe del Mar (duggaduggadugga...DANG!...duggadugga..DANG!)
